Happiest German Word of the Week Award

The word for lightbulb, Glühbirne, translates literally into English as glowing-pear. A lightbulb is pear shaped, it glows. How logical, and how much more artistic than the English word!

  1. I hope you realise you've just established a weekly tradition...
    I'm not too impressed by this one. It's a simply wonderful word, but it's not really all that logical. I mean, if someone said "glowing-pear" you'd not really think of a light bulb. Of course, if someone said light bulb, you probably wouldn't think of one either...
