Being back in Germany, it seemed appropriate to resurrect this 'Hazel in Deutschland' blog, as it's as good a way as any other to let you know what I am getting upto, and which intricacies of German culture I have been surprised by or failed to get to grips with recently!
A quick summary for those who haven't been paying attention, or for those I simply didn't get round to telling- my move to Germany this time was pretty swift and unplanned, so I only had about three days to sort myself out! I moved to Berlin last week, to start a six month internship at Zalando, a German online fashion company that has recently branched out into England. I am working on the English website, with various tasks such as translating the original German captions, uploading pictures and doing reports on which pictures get clicked on the most (which shows which brands, trends and styles prospective customers are most interested in). It is pretty interesting really, and it was very nice of them to employ me despite having no experience of that kind of thing whatsoever!
I have managed to get myself a flat, which is in a good location and has pretty much everything I need, except that at the moment it is lacking a fridge. When I first moved in, I was worried I just hadn't noticed it (which was a bit unlikely seeing as the kitchen is compact, to say the least, and probably not the best place to hide anything really, let alone a big kitchen appliance). I kept opening the cupboard doors anyway, hoping that a fridge would have mysteriously materialised there since last time I looked. Unfortunately, it didn't, and when I asked my landlord, he just said 'Oh yeah, I forgot to mention.... the old one is broken, I'll get you a new one'. So hopefully that will be soon, but he seems very laid back about it!
That brings you up to date, so I will leave it there, and get ready for my second week of Berlin life, fridgelessness, and work!
